The Story,
On Saturday April 5th 2014 I was driving to my niece and nephew's house. While driving I saw a paper bag on the side of the road, and when I got closer I saw that it was a little kitten, not a paper bag. I quickly pulled over and as soon as I got out of the car, the kitten ran at full speed toward me and jumped into my arms. When I looked at her, she was so tiny and I thought she may have been hit by a car. Her neck was missing a lot of hair and had horrible wounds on it. Also her fur was so matted that it could not be combed. I thought maybe she was a couple months old at best.

I knew that this little kitty was days away from death because of her condition, and the thought of leaving here there would haunt me for the rest of my life (Im an animal sucker anyway) So I brought her into the car and went to my niece and nephew's house to clean her up.

Here is what she looked like when I first picked her up...

A Little Scared but very friendly

Pretty Severe wounds on her neck

To the Vet

That Monday (April 7th) Mike called the vet right away in the morning and they squeezed her in. The Vet said that with proper care and nutrition, she should make a full recovery. The Vet said if I hadn't found her, she may not have made it more than 24- 48 hours :(

At the Vet they determined that she had the following conditions:
  • Looked like a possible bite wound on the neck from an animal
  • The neck and sores were infected
  • High Fever due to infection
  • She had ear mites and her ears were totally plugged
  • She had worms/parasites
  • Her fur was so matted that she had to be shaved
  • Mites on her body
  • Very Skinny and Malnourished
The Vet gave her a Full Exam and determined she needed the following:  Parasite Meds, Antibiotics, Pain Medicine, and Ear Mite medicine. She needed to be sedated so her wounds could be lanced and cleaned to clear the infection. They also cleaned her ears, trimmed the nails, and shaved her fur because the matting was too bad to brush out. We also had her tested for Feline Aids/Leukemia and were so happy that they were both negative! During the vet appt.,as sick as she was, all she did was go from person to person to get snuggled.  They couldn't believe how happy she was because she was so sick!

Bringing her Home

After this whole ordeal she was still the most loving, happy and friendly cat ever! Because she was so little and sickly we weren't sure she would survive the anesthesia, but she came thru just fine. The vet thought she was about two months old, but after examining her teeth she determined she is about six months old! From here on she's been called 'Munchkin'

Not Doing so well

On Friday April 18th it seemed that the wounds on her neck were not clearing up as well as expected so she was brought back to the vet to get checked.  Apparently,  the skin over the wound healed too fast and trapped in the infection.  She also had a fever so they kept her for two nights.  Munchkin needed to be sedated and her wounds needed to be cleaned out once again.  They put drain tubes in so the infection can clear up.  They thought the type antibiotics she was on were not helping, so they wanted to get a culture sample of the infection to determine exactly which Antibiotics to give her. The vet said otherwise we could keep trying different ones and she could end up back there again with the same problem. Munchkin is receiving antibiotics, pain meds and a special solution to put on her wounds. She will be back at the vet in two days to hopefully get the drain tubes taken out and get checked.  Our goal is to get her healthy as fast as possible so she doesn't suffer needlessly.

Even after all this and getting drain tubes put in, she just wants to be snuggled and held :) She is on pain meds but the wounds and drain tubes do not seem to be causing her any discomfort or pain.

In Conclusion, the vet seems to think she will lead a healthy and active life with no problems. The fact that the kitten ran up to a complete stranger on the side of the road tells me she was probably a pet. It infuriates me that rotten people could let an animal suffer like this! I better not say any more! The plan is to get her 100% healthy and find her the perfect home....

Thanks to Jaclyn, Mike, Michelle, and Kristy for taking such good care of her!

*And an Extra special Thanks to Mike and Jaclyn for keeping her at their house and tending to her care every day :D*

We would also like to thank the Animal Hospital of Oshkosh for their care and donation of some of their services to Munchkin!

Munchkins Update April 21, 2014

Munchkin went to the vet this morning to get her drain tubes checked to see if they could come out.  We were so happy to find out that her fever broke and the drain tubes were taken out! The lab results have not come in yet to let the Dr. know if she is on the correct antibiotics.  Munchkin is still receiving pain medicine to make sure she isn't in pain.  As you can see from the pictures and video she is feeling much better! Munchkin will go back to the vet next week to make sure she is healing properly.

Thanks to all of you who have donated to give this little kitty a fighting chance. Every life if valuable and we will do everything we can to make sure she heals fast and is happy.

Munchkin is on the mend!

Munchkin is doing very well and is still on her Antibiotics for the infection on her neck. There is still slight swelling in that spot but it's much better than last week. She has a Vet appointment this week for a checkup to see how she is doing. Right now all she wants to do is play and give people/Dogs/anything attention!

When I grow up, I'd like my fur back!
